Immediate emotional and practical support helpline – 0800 0126549

An NHS, free, confidential, 24/7 helpline provided by Vita Health Group, in partnership with AWP. The line is staffed by experienced counsellors, who you can talk to and they will listen. They will offer emotional support and can connect you to organisations available in Bristol, North Somerset, and South Gloucestershire (BNSSG).

The helpline is for people aged 18 and over who are living within BNSSG or are registered with a GP within BNSSG.

If you are 17 or under, please instead call the Children and Young People’s helpline via Avon & Wiltshire Partnership SPA line (0300 303 1320).


AbilityNet’s Tech volunteers provide free IT support to older people and disabled people of any age in the UK. They can help with IT challenges from setting up new equipment, fixing technical issues, showing you how to stay connected to family and use online services. Support can be requested online or by helpline.

Age UK Bristol

Age UK Bristol and Linkage provide a number of services for older adults, including advice, social and community groups, befriending, and practical support. Advice is also available for carers and family.

Al-Anon Family & Alateen

Al-Anon Family Groups provide support to anyone whose life is, or has been, affected by someone else’s drinking, regardless of whether that person is still drinking or a part of their lives. Alateen meetings are specifically for those age 12-17 who have been affected by someone else’s drinking. A free helpline is also available.

Alcoholics Anonymous – AA

Alcoholics Anonymous provide a safe space for individuals to discuss their personal experiences with alcohol with the overall aim of overcoming alcohol addiction. Meetings are open to people in any stage of recovery.

Both open and closed meetings are available throughout Bristol and the surrounding areas, face-to-face and online. National helpline also available.

Alzheimer’s Society – Helpline

Alzheimer’s Society are a charity that campaigns for change in dementia care, funds research towards a cure, and provides support to people currently living with dementia. They offer a “Dementia Connect” support line to put people in touch with local dementia services and offer advice. They also provide the Bristol Dementia Wellbeing Service.

Anorexia and Bulimia Care (ABC)

A national eating disorders organisation providing on-going care, emotional support, and practical guidance for anyone affected by eating disorders, including those struggling personally and families, friends, and carers. Services include a national helpline, a telephone befriending service, online support groups, and online resources.

Anxiety UK

Anxiety UK work to relieve and support those living with anxiety and anxiety-based depression by providing information, support and understanding via an extensive range of services, including a telephone helpline, and text- and email-based support.

Additionally, fee-paying members of Anxiety UK have access to discounted therapy from approved providers, support groups, and a range of other resources.

The UK’s eating disorder charity, Beat provide information and support. Services include online support groups, one to one webchat, helplines, and online self-help tools.

Bipolar UK

Bipolar UK is dedicated to supporting individuals with bipolar, their families and carers. Services include support groups (the Bristol Support Group meets online), a peer support line, and online information.

Bristol Drugs Project

Bristol Drugs Project provide free and confidential support to people who are looking for help with their own alcohol and drug use, and the people who care for and about them. Services include support groups, drop-ins, harm reduction, and a dedicated helpline. Specific and targeted support is available for children and young people, students, older people, women, and the LGBTQ+ community. A specific service is available for recent drug and alcohol-related bereavements.

Carers UK

A charity dedicated to improving the lives of carers. Services include a helpline providing advice & information for carers on any issue including benefits, residential care, the Carer’s Act and respite care, and online forums where carers can meet and connect.

Child Bereavement UK

Child Bereavement UK supports families and educates professionals when a baby or child of any age dies or is dying, or when a child is facing bereavement. They provide support nationally through their helpline and dedicated online support groups and support sessions.


ChildLine is a free and confidential service operated by the NSPCC. Support is available for UK residents under 19 years of age by phone (0800 1111), online, or by email, with Welsh language and BSL counsellors also available. The website also provides a range of resources for young people.

Family Lives

Family Lives offer a confidential and free helpline for families and parents in England and Wales, providing emotional support, information, advice, and guidance relating to all aspects of family life.


Forcesline is a free and confidential telephone helpline and email service that provides support for serving and ex-service men and women and reserves from the Armed Forces and for their families. SSAFA, who operate the line, are an independent charity outside of the military chain of command.


Frank provides honest information and friendly, confidential advice about drugs. The service is accessible through online information, a 24/7 helpline, and webchat, email, and text services.


Galop are a LGBT+ anti-abuse charity, providing support to LGBT+ people who have experienced abuse and violence. They provide helplines, advocacy, online support communities, and dedicated services for LGBT+ children and young people.


GamCare is the leading UK provider of free information, advice and support for anyone harmed by gambling. They provide both telephone and online support.

Gendered Intelligence

Gendered Intelligence offer information and resources for trans+ people, and a dedicated support line for the patients of the Nottingham Centre for Transgender Health and Sheffield Porterbrook clinics.

Grief Encounter

Grief Encounter provide free, immediate, one-to-one support to children and young people who have been bereaved. Support is also available for parents or carers when a child in the family is being supported.

Hoarding UK

Hoarding UK are a national charity supporting people impacted by hoarding behaviour. Services include helplines, support groups, advocacy, and training.

Intercom Trust

Intercom Trust provide support to LGBT+ people across the South West of England. They offer a dedicated South West helpline, and specific services for people in Devon, Cornwall, and Dorset.


Kinship offer information, advice and connection opportunities for kinship carers, those who are raising a relative or friend’s child.

Maternity Action

Maternity Action provide advice, information, and confidential telephone support to parents worried about their rights at work and rights to benefits and healthcare.


Mermaids supports transgender, non-binary, and gender-diverse youth and their families, up to their 20th birthday, and offers webchat support to gender-diverse students up to the age of 25.

Mind Infoline

Mind Infoline, provided by National Mind, provides information and signposting about mental health problems, treatments, and advocacy.

Mindline Trans+

Mindline Trans+ is a UK-wide confidential emotional support and signposting helpline for people who identify as transgender, non-binary, or otherwise gender-diverse and their families and friends. The service is provided by Bristol Mind and Mind in Somerset, and is staffed by listeners with lived experience of being trans+.


MindOut is an LGBTQ+ mental health service providing information, resources, and emotional support. In-person services are provided in Brighton and Hove, and online services are available nationwide.

Mothers for Mothers

Mothers for Mothers offer a range of perinatal mental health support services. Most of their services, including helplines, one-to-one sessions, and counselling, are directed at mothers, but monthly support sessions are also available for fathers.


Nacoa provide information, support, and advice for people of all ages affected by a parent’s drinking. Support is provided online and through a free helpline.

Next Link

Next Link is part of Missing Link Mental Health Services, providing specific support services for women who are experiencing domestic abuse. Services include safe houses, crisis response, outreach, and helplines.

No Panic

No Panic is a charity which helps people who suffer from Panic Attacks, Phobias, Obsessive Compulsive Disorders and other related anxiety disorders. Support is provided through a helpline and self-help tools.

OCD Action

OCD Action provide support and information to anybody affected by OCD. Services include a helpline and online support groups.

On My Mind

On My Mind, from the Anna Freud Centre, offers a range of self-help tools and information for young people around topics relating to mental health. The Anna Freud Centre also has a dedicated crisis text messenger service.


PAPYRUS work to prevent young suicide. They have a dedicated helpline to support young people and adults under the age of 35, and an online platform for producing suicide safety plans with the help of a helpline adviser.

Respect Phoneline

The Respect Phoneline is a confidential and anonymous helpline for perpetrators of domestic abuse – of any gender – who want help to stop their abusive behaviours.

Rosie Crane Trust

The Rosie Crane Trust supports bereaved parents who have lost a son or daughter of any age and at any stage in the bereavement. The trust offers a confidential 24hr Helpline, two drop in centres in Somerset, and a befriending service.


Safeline provide support to survivors of sexual assault and rape. Online counselling is available, and there is a dedicated helpline for male survivors.


Sands is the leading stillbirth and neonatal death charity in the UK, offering support to anyone affected by the death of a baby. Sands has a bereavement support freephone helpline and a variety of volunteer-led local and online support groups.


SANE are a national mental health charity offering information, resources, and emotional support. Support can be provided by telephone or text message; this is a non-urgent service and is not appropriate for people experiencing a mental health crisis.

Sex Addicts Anonymous

Sex Addicts Anonymous (SAA) is an organisation providing support to individuals who want to heal from engaging in harmful sexual behaviours. Support is provided through helplines and support groups.


Shelter provide advice, information, support, and legal aid legal services to individuals who are experiencing issues with housing, homeless, or at risk of homelessness.

Stop It Now!

Stop it Now! is a free confidential helpline and information resource aimed at preventing child sexual abuse. The helpline is available for anyone concerned about child sexual abuse and its prevention – whether they’re concerned about their own thoughts and behaviour, the behaviour of another adult or young person, or the protection of a child.


SurvivorsUK provide a national online helpline, individual and group counselling for boys, men, and non-binary people aged 13+ who have experienced sexual violence at any time in their lives. They also offer emotional support to men going through the justice system in relation to experiencing sexual violence.


Switchboard LGBT+ Helpline provide a one-stop listening service for LGBT+ people on the phone, by email, and through instant messaging

The Compassionate Friends

The Compassionate Friends provide befriending, support and a helpline for bereaved parents, grandparents or siblings who have suffered the death of a child or children of any age and from any cause. Online and local support groups are also available.

The Mix

The Mix is a free, confidential support service for young people under 25, dealing with a range of issues from mental health to money, drugs to homelessness. Services available include a helpline, webchat, crisis text messenger, and short term counselling.

The Silver Line

The Silver Line operate a free, confidential, 24-hour telephone helpline for people aged 55+ in the UK, and offer a telephone friendship service connecting people aged 60+ with volunteers to reduce social isolation.

Victim Support

Victim Support offer free, independent, and confidential advice and support to anyone who has been affected by crime, including a 24-hour helpline, and advocacy for victims of domestic abuse.


Womankind supports women in the Bristol area with professional counselling, group psychotherapy, befriending and a helpline service.

Women’s Aid

Women’s Aid is a national charity working to end domestic abuse against women and children. They have a live chat and email service for survivors, as well as information and a directory of services.
