Bristol Law Clinic – partnership with University of Bristol

Free Legal Advice

Bristol Mind has formed a partnership with the University of Bristol Law Clinic to provide access to support for a wide range of legal problems and issues.

Please contact the Outreach Advocacy service on 0117 9800376 if you would like to help with a legal problem. We will support you to access the Law Clinic.  Unfortunately this service is not able to help with matters relating to Immigration or Asylum.

Background to the Law Clinic

Set up back in 1996, the University of Bristol Law Clinic has been offering free legal advice to members of the public ever since.  This is a student-led service, provided under the supervision of law school staff.  Through advising on a range of areas, including housing and tenancy queries, benefits disputes, employment problems, and even family law related issues, we pride ourselves on our service to the community.  This involves not only straightforward legal advice and preparing clients for court, but also through our outreach projects.  For example, we have a relationship with CLIC Sargent, offering the parents of those children suffering or recovering with cancer, legal advice on issues that may have arisen due to the diagnosis – whether that is helping them find accommodation, or advising them on their employment rights during lengthy hospital stays.

We also run StreetLaw projects in a range of areas.  This involves clinic members holding informative sessions within schools or other groups or bodies on specific legal issues.  For instance, within certain maternity sessions we teach on maternity rights within employment.  Alternatively, at our tenancy-issues drop-in, we educate on the law relating to housing and accommodation for those who are in need.

Our student remit has more than doubled between the years 2015 to 2018, due to both student interest and the invaluable service offered.  Alongside this aspect of development, we recently gained new staff assistance, and moved into our own offices at 8-10 Berkeley Square.  This has student work spaces, a professional reception area, and custom interviewing suites designed to make all clients feel at ease.”
