Independent Mental Capacity Advocacy (IMCA)
The Bristol Mind IMCA service provides an independent advocate to support and represent people facing certain significant decisions. These decisions will normally relate to long-term accommodation moves or serious medical treatment.
In certain circumstances, IMCA advocates may also represent and support people subject to care reviews or involved in adult protection proceedings.
Under the terms of the Mental Capacity Act local authorities or NHS bodies must instruct an IMCA when the person concerned:
- has been assessed as lacking capacity to make this specific decisions for themselves, and
- has no one other than paid staff to represent them
